Because I hate myself or something, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] deancasbigbang. Which I knew was coming up when I finished Crossroads State. And the sensible thing to do, really, would have been to spend the next however-many months and change editing that until it was so perfect you could die. Plus, I would have maybe gotten art of Dean and Cas riding a dinosaur, which I really really want. XD But I knew spending that long with it still-not-technically-done would have made me insane. So here I am all HOW DO I IDEAS.

I COULD wait till the season finishes and see if there's anything I want to do with that, but I'm still super nervous about writing canon, especially long-form like that. And I'm nervous about waiting that long. I'm just nervous in general. I have a thing I started before 7.17 came out or we even knew much about it where there's a very creative (not) amnesia!waiter scenario in Ohio with mean ghosties. But ehhhh. And there's a girl!Dean thing that could easily go on for enough words but it's not very good and would very likely just get worse. Also these things are not really canon.

Or I could do another big ol' AU. But my ideas for one thus far have gone a little something like, "What if it's the 20s and Dean's in love with his valet? OH WAIT," and "OOH what if they visit a bunch of other universes and are together in all of them? OH WAIT" and "French Mistake but in reverse with Jensen and Misha hang on I didn't sign up for RPF" and at some point it degenerates into "uhhh, maybe someone's a photographer. AGAIN," and "HOLY SHIT SUPERSAINTS?!!?" and finally I'm just sitting there drunk and drooling all, "IDK college or sutin pfffff." I did have this one total ridic idea where it's indie coffee shop owner vs. Starbucks GM, and it would be so industry-accurate because The Boy is a WEALTH of information but nobody would GAF about all my meticulous research and probably be pissed at me for slagging off Starbucks. XD

tl;dr I am ridiculous and don't know what to write. *returns to gazing at navel*

So kinda serious question?

I don't wanna be a dick or an irresponsible author but it turns out that when a fic gets really long, stuff I'd normally throw in a warning along the lines of "oh yeah, this is there for a second but the fic's not all about it or anything but yeah, it's there in case you can't deal with even a passing reference" is suddenly like an entire paragraph.

And okay, I'm being a little bit of a dick here because I'm afraid that having a swathe of greyed-out text that wide in the warnings section is going to make people go holy shit, this must be full of bloodletting and torture and horrible things *backbutton.*

I don't really read warnings, because the stuff that bothers me the most is generally someone else's kink and it's advertised all over the place, and/or it's MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH RAPEY SUICIDE CODE RED BLEEP BLEEP but I've been blindsided by eating disorders and self-injury and was Not Pleased. Then again, I read a thing with some unexpected watersports and it was actually generally awesome and I probably wouldn't have bothered with it if it'd had a big blinking THIS HAS PEE IN IT sign.

I'm not even talking about pee and major kinks and awful things happening to people in terms of my warnings, I'm talking about like oh, there's minor character with a drug problem, and oh, this one character who's a jerkface says something homophobic, and there's a fairly ignorant portrayal of gay clubs that's based on me having been to like, three of them ever in my life and having watched the whole run of Queer as Folk.

I guess I just don't want to screw myself out of readers because I'm being maybe-oversensitive, but I also don't want to ruin anybody's day.

Most of you guys write or least read quite a bit-- can you weigh in on your fic-warning experiences?

Post the first sentence (or three) from every WIP you're currently working on, even if it's very short. Then invite people to ask questions about your WIPs. With any luck, the motivation to take that WIP one step closer to completion will appear as if by magic!

I've seen a few people doing this thing so I figured why not, since I spawn snippety beginnings like some bacteria propagate. These are just the ones that have a snowball's chance of getting finished and exist in generally-recognizable fandoms (i.e. I left out all the weird AU stuff from RP-land that the only giving-a-shit party has already read). One has bloated its way to nearly novel-length but the rest haven't got much to them. There's a couple for SPN, a couple for The Walking Dead, and a couple for The Hour. Two out of six are crossovers, because I'm me. XD look at my WIP-ness, hurrr )

Well. Floor's open, I guess. Yay, crickets.

So how much actual content with plotty-happening-stuff does one actually need per, oh, 40,000 words or so? I mean, happening-stuff other than "here are all the ways in which they are slowly and obviously falling in love/meant for each other/oblivious/in denial/revealing backstory/eating pie/riding dinosaurs/accidentally cuddling." Before you just give up reading and/or skip to the sexy stuff near the end. Like, is "none" okay? 'Cause, um.

I mean, I guess most of the stuff I write is like that. My so-called plots are mostly people and not so much with the events. They just kind of wander through whatever world I'm playing self-indulgently in and talk to each other and have thoughts. And maybe sometimes I get a cool turn of phrase or two in there or throw in a competing love-interest, but it's not like big drama-filled edge-of-your-seat Happenings. You pretty much know, because it's me writing, that I'm not going to kill them or have them go blind or really even have a bigger obstacle than "guys, get your heads out of your asses and your dicks into each other's."

And I guess maybe I wonder if that isn't all that fun, or I'm not challenging myself, or even who the hell's going to read it because this has been done 2304983 times with minor differences in details. And I guess I feel lame next to all the people who can rock the plotty happenings, like they're JK Rowling and I'm the grocery store romance novelist. But I guess people still buy those.

/end navel-gazing

Totally stolen from [livejournal.com profile] blackletter, because you know how much I love blathering about ficcing!

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

All my stuff is on this tag and anything is fair game. C'mon, you know you want to.

I am emobot today, so...

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] janeturenne, because she said it should be stolen:

Give me the title of a story I've never written, and feedback telling me what you liked best about it, and I will tell you any of: the first sentence, the last sentence, the thing that made me want to write it, the biggest problem I had while writing it, why it almost never got posted, the scene that hit the cutting room floor but that I wish I'd been able to salvage, or something else that I want readers to know.

Any fandom I've ever written or sort-of-written is fair game, but if it's not clear from the title and comments, I reserve the right to make it up.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] jeeves_stills has a new challenge up and everyone should make pretties.

Sorry I'm behind on reading of stuff. Shall remedy tomorrow. <3

0. Mostly, I wanted to show off this icon I made. *points*

1. Writer's block like whoa. I get like one sentence out and get distracted by something shiny. My brain's doing something that goes a little bit like Trek! Jooster! Joostertrek! No, wait! Fireflytrek! TorchJooster! Ianto is Jeeves and they're on the Enterprise and run into Serenity! And what about that thing where Jeeves had a secret wife? Ducky? Ducky who? ARGFARGLEVALETSPACE. Yeah. That's what my head sounds like on the indoors.

2. KINGDOM. Was great. Is great. Is being great. Oh Lyle. *looks at watch* Hey, next week! Get here with new ep plz. When does Peter get a boyfriend? Wishful thinking, I know.

3. Well, it would be a pretty lame list if it only had two things on it.....

Um. Make me write porn. Prompts. Issue them now. Maybe with word count limits.

ETA 6/10: I am exhausted and falling asleep. Ficlettings to continue on the morrow.

Sort of for my own edification, but I guess a few other people might be interested.

So. The List of Shit What's Getting Wrote, more or less in the order it's going to get written.

*[livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest fic to be posted May 13. This goes first 'cause for once I don't want to be up till all hours the night before trying to finish. spoilers, I guess? )

And, um, I guess this is where I need a flowchart. sparing your flists )

I really would like for there to be an invention that can remove a story from one's head fully-formed and translate it into text.
