Summary: Deanna couldn't make it work with Lisa and left with Cas when he showed up in Indiana. Now she's got a thousand empty spaces where Sam should be and Cas has a thousand more where Heaven should be, but the job is the job and the road is the road and they're in it together.

POSSIBLY SPOILERY Notes:

Many months ago, I decided to start a project I called 'The Slowest Fanmix in History', a series of AU fics based on songs. This was (and still is, I guess) track two (wasn't kidding about slow). I heard First Aid Kit's 'King of the World' and was just like THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A SONG ABOUT GIRL!DEAN. Which, if you listen to it, you'll realize I stole half the events in the story from the song. And I kept sending the_reverand bits and pieces as I wrote them and it just got longer and longer and then bigbang signups came around, and there was flailing and triedunture had to hold my hand a little bit too but I didn't give up and here we are.

So the soundtrack to this is pretty much 'King of the World' on infinite repeat, but I was also listening to Al Scorch's Tired Ghostly Town tons and tons, and their song 'Two Flags,' while not plot-related in any other way, has the line, "when she stops breathing in her sleep, she swears he calls her name," and I stole that too. All the locations visited in the story, other than Cicero and Sioux Falls, are places I've been. The writing happened over a massive transition in my life, where I moved from my hometown to Minnesota, and Paul Bunyan Land was one of the first places we went because it seemed like such a ridiculous thing. To my knowledge, there's never been anything happening there like what goes on in the story, but it looks just like somewhere a case might happen. They legit have a mystery spot (with a misspelled sign!) and a giant talking Paul Bunyan and a haunted mine bunch of stuff that seems to be TOTALLY unrelated to anything lumberjack-y because the park moved at some point and got attached to this antique hoarder's pioneer village thing and it's just really fucking weird but great in that kind of sad way? You would think the entire story takes place here for all the attention I've given it, but I'm fascinated with the place.

1. Outsider POV. Not necessarily voyeurism, although it could have that element. Mostly I just like it when some third character ponders/notices stuff about the main pairing, maybe that they're together or maybe that they should be, maybe why they make sense or that they don't.
2. Non-canonical universes. What if xyz had happened this way instead of that way, what if they were librarians, what if time travel, what if the TARDIS or some wizards suddenly showed up. I guess it's kind of a cheat to lump AUs and crossovers in like that together, but I love anything that takes them out of normal canon in whatever way and I'm really not that picky about it.
3. Frottage. Clothes on, clothes off, clothes anywhere in between, dirty-desperate or slow-romantic, doesn't matter as long as it's face to face and grind-y.
4. Competency. Maybe they're a BAMF in a fight, maybe they're great at piano or making pizza. I love it when a character gets to have their mad skills appreciated, especially if said skills are a turn-on for someone else.
5. Friends-to-lovers. That point in a comfortable awesome practically-married friendship where the MFEO finally gets acknowledged.
