As far as I know, there's nothing in canon that says one way or the other what kind of life alt!Ianto has (heck, for all we know the Joneses got a poodle instead of having a kid). In my brain he was one of the Preachers and sort of got railroaded into heading up TW3 by Pete after they got rid of the Cybermen. I'm not even sure if I came up with that on my own or read something that gave me the idea. Thanks for reading! :D
